The Five Natural Scents that Smell Good to Everybody

Apparently there are five scents that smell good to everybody. And they are:

1. lime (fruit)
2. grapefruit (fruit)
3. bergamot (similar to an orange in scent)
4. orange (fruit)
5. peppermint

And these are the runners up:

6. freesia (flower)
7. amyl acetate (a molecule that smells like apples and bananas)
8. cassia (similar to cinnamon)
9. mimosa (flowering tree)

10. fir (tree)

I've always found it strange that lots of perfumes include fruit notes. But now it makes perfect sense. You can read more here.

It's interesting that it's the citrus scents we seem to be most attracted to - I wonder if it's evolutionary, as we need vitamin C so regularly?

Interesting. I definitely agree with the lime. I'd add coffee to the list but maybe that's just me!

Grace, great point!

Sorry, but I don't like grapefruit - there is always one awkward customer.... Not even a glace cherry on top can tempt me!

The Moth hates grapefruit, everything about it. Me, I love it, but I see in a perfume how some folks think it smells like cat pee

Hi Grace - could be a natural preference for Vit C as you say.

Hi Beautiful Things - know what you mean about coffee - me too.

Hi Flittersniffer - grapefruit is wincingly sharp. I'd prefer a pineapple any day.

Hi Bloody Frida - shame that you're so limited by The Moth!

What an interesting list!! And I have strong likes for the first five, and am somewhat scratching my head over the second five. (Freesia = Instant migraine. Amyl acetate =??? Cassia, no, cinnamon, yes. And so on...)

I thought everyone's favorite smell was baby breath... ;)

Hi LCN - I find the whole list totally surprising. Apart from cinnamon, I'm not sure if I would have guessed the others at all. Where's the jasmine, the hyacinth, the rose, the neroli? Freesia is the only flower or blossom that's mentioned. Perhaps the fragrance industry needs to go in a whole new direction!

Mmm, agreed on the first 5— even the grapefruit, which I hate to eat, but looove to smell. Surprised that neither lavender nor ylang-ylang made either list...
