Today, my husband and I took our four lovely children to
One of the very few shops that we briefly went into was Beauty Base. It stocks masses of perfume, most of which you can try. The actual shop is better than the online store, which doesn’t seem to have such a wide range. Anyway, I managed to speedily snap up a few new perfumes as well as try a few things whilst we were there.
Un Jardin Sur le Nil has been on my list for some time as something I should try. Whenever there are conversations about muted/sophisticated/quiet perfumes, this one seems to be mentioned. Funnily, it wasn’t until quite recently that I realised that the Nil refers to ‘
The first whiff of Un Jardin sur le Nil reminded me of how my skin smells naturally after swimming outside on a hot day. It smelt very fresh and natural, with a hint of garden spiciness, perhaps nutmeg and jasmine. It lacks any of the ‘perfuminess’ of many female fragrances.
Now, after several hours, the drydown is almost leathery. For me, this fragrance is sexy and decidedly masculine (although the Hermès website suggests that this fragrance is for men and women). The smell is intriguing as I can’t think of anything that it’s similar to. I’ll definitely revisit Un Jardin Sur le Nil, if only to be able to define it a bit more accurately.

I have a small bottle of this one. It is very nice for spring and summer.
I love your "interpretation" of the name. I thought the same thing when I first saw it!
I loooove this scent when it first goes on, and I think your description is quite apt. How....ever... on me, it has a half-life of about 15 minutes. It goes something like this: *Splash* Beautiful!! Check your watch 15 minutes later-- where's it going?...15 minutes...what the...? 60 minutes...Gone. That *may* be on purpose, but to what purpose, I cannot say...
Thanks for having me up on your blog roll! I'll be stopping by...

I know what you mean LCN - it wears off super quickly, which is a shame. It's funny that the scents you want to wear off never do though..
If you haven't already read it, do check out Chandler Burr's wonderful book "The Perfect Scent", in which Burr, the NY Times perfume critic, actually follows the creation of "Un Jardin sur le Nil" from concept to creation to launch. Very, very interesting reading about this scent in general and the perfume industry in general.
Have a great weekend,
Michael
Thanks for the comment. I haven't read The Perfect Scent. But I've heard about it because in 'The Perfume Guide' Luca Turin's comments about this section of The Perfect Scent. I will read it as it sounds interesting.
Did you see Chandler Burr's review in the NY Times yesterday?

It's interesting and worth a read, but I don't know how I feel about a $310 scent.
When we were in Nice last year we went to Molinard - their newest fragrance in 160. I'm sorry to say I only smelled it on a stick - thought that when I got back to Seattle I could find it at Nordstrom's and get a sample - not available - they had never heard of the company. My rememberance is that it was wonderful. Their main office is in Grasse - no outlet in Paris which we are visiting in October. Sob. Would love to know what you think of it!
Hi!
So frustrating when you smell something lovely but can't find it anywhere. Molinard do have an online store. I've checked and they sell Molinard 160 online. Here's the link.

If I manage to get hold of some Molinard 160 I will be sure to write a review.
Best wishes.
